The department of Zoology was established in the year 1968. Dr. M J Sundara Ram, Dr. N Ramanna, Dr. T A Balakrishna, Dr. G M Nijaguna, Dr. Prabhakar G Ghai, Prof. MJH Shafi, Dr. C Vinutha, and Dr. P C Sreedharan have tended the department to its present magnificent dimension.

The faculty members have authored several books based on curriculum. They have been participating as resource persons / subject experts in orientation programs and workshops for students and teachers. They are regularly invited to deliver popular talks related to curriculum by various pre-university and degree colleges. They have been participating in Edu-Sat, Radio and Television program and teleconferences. They are also involved in offering consultation services for designing/equipping laboratories in the upcoming colleges.

Dr. M J Sundar Ram publishes books on popular science for children in Kannada and has also authored a book on Kabaddi, his favourite game. Dr. T A Balakrishna is also active in popularizing science through books in Kannada and his lectures on popular science topics. Dr. T A Balakrishna was an alumnus and is presently the President of Jeeva Vijaya Alumni Trust.

The department always believes in inspiring students to discover their hidden talent, striving to mould their all-round personality and in contributing towards making better citizens.

Some of the activities undertaken to support curricular accomplishments are

• Encouraging students to develop communication skills through seminars and projects.
• Conducting education trips to give a first-hand exposure to the Biodiversity, Research laboratories of National and International importance.
• Encouraging the students to organize exhibition of museum specimens and critical environmental and health issues for the benefit of all students in the campus – High School, D.Ed, Pre-University and Degree College students.
• Training the students to take up awareness programmes on Social issues.
• Holding periodical discussions on the day to day developments in life sciences under the aegis of Nature Club.
• Encouraging students to procure any special news items from news papers/ magazines/journals and displaying the same in the Department's notice board

At present, Prof. Dhanalakshmi is heading the department.
