The department had its foundation laid by Rao Bahadur Prof. B. Venkateshachar who was one of the founding fathers of the college and had earlier held the posts of Principal, Central College and Director, Indian Institute of Science. The Department envisages
- indigenous in-house development of the apparatus required
- motivating younger generation towards self-reliance
- evolving innovative and effective teaching-learning class room techniques through experimentation and class-room experience.
Many eminent teachers like Prof. B V Narayana Rao, M AVenkatachar, Dr. (Late) C R Gopinath, Dr. B S Nagaraj, Prof. R V Rama Murthy, Prof K Amaranath, Prof. (Late) V T Bhuvaneshwari, Prof. N Anantha Ramu, Dr. H S Nagaraja, Dr. T N Chandrakantha, Dr. P Nagaraju, (Late)Prof. B Gopal Reddy, Prof. G Vasantha Lakshmi, Prof. K Muralidhara, Prof. A Rajagopal, Dr. V Anuradha, (Late) Dr. S Sundareshan, Dr. R S Geetha, and Prof. R Chitra have nurtured the department to its present magnitude. Prof. B V Narayana Rao served the institutions under BHS Higher Education Society in the capacity of Secretary from 1998 till has last breath in 2019.
Laboratory manuals are prepared and periodically revised by the faculty for the benefit of the students. The Department also provides a question bank consisting of frequently asked questions which is periodically updated. The faculty participate in designing curriculum, as resource persons for student and teacher workshops at High School, PU and degree level. The department takes active part in conducting seminars and workshops for Bangalore University college teachers. Student seminars are organized regularly. Students are encouraged to exhibit their creativity through model making, poster presentation and collage presentations to enhance their skills.
The department has instituted cash prizes to students securing highest marks in Physics in each of the semesters. Special prizes are awarded to students securing 100% in Physics in any of the semesters. The prizes are distributed on the annual college Day function. The department organizes and trains the students to take up the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) conducted by IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers).
