The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 1986 and was inaugurated by Dr. Raja Raman, Head, Computer Science Division, Indian Institute of Science. The growth of the department was monitored personally by the then Secretary Late Sri. H Ramaswamy and Prof. Dr. S Krishna, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The faculty was drawn from Mathematics and Physics in the initial years. The department was nurtured by Dr. A K Atre and Prof. H K Nagaraja, Department of Mathematics, Prof. H S Balakrishna and Sri A Rajagopal, Department of Physics, during its initial days.

The department has shown an exponential growth since its beginning. The computing facilities have undergone thorough changes keeping in tune with current technology. A new laboratory with adequate space, equipped with latest computing systems have been added to cater to the requirements of new courses like BCA which was started in 2007. The department has been updating its systems to keep up with the fast-paced changes in the field.

The department organizes several workshops to improve the curriculum content and examination pattern, both at the PU and the degree level, as well as to bridge the gap between the industry and the institution. The department encourages and provides help to students to take up outside project works.

Student seminars are also regularly conducted to keep them abreast of the global competition. The faculty participate in designing curriculum, as resource persons for student and teacher workshops at High School, PU and degree level.

The department functions as a nodal agency for designing the curriculum for different career-oriented programs being run in different institutions. Its endeavour has been to provide future leaders for the IT, ITES and BPO sectors.

Prof. H K Gundu Rao has beenconstantly nurturing the department. He served as head of the department for almost two decades. Prof. H K Gundu Rao has guided nearly about 20 students for M.Phil. program. He has authored several books for the benefit of PU, B.Sc., BCA, BE and MCA students and has earned accolades from both the students and the faculty of different institutions and universities.

A minor research project titled “MultiFont Kannada Character Recognition” funded by UGC has been completed by Prof. H K Gundu Rao.

Presently, Prof. B Latha is heading the department.
