The department of Botany was established in the year 1968. Dr. T S Vaidyeshwara, Prof. K N Chandrashekar and Prof. (Late) R Vijaya Raghava have nurtured the growth of the department. Dr. T S Vaidyeshwara retired as Principal of the college. Under COSIP (College Science Improvement Programme) of UGC, during the early 1970's a good number of equipment was added to the department. Dr. M K Nanjappa, Dr. N Sathyananda,Dr. R K Chandranath, Prof. Sudha Sandilya, and Dr. Deepak Bhat served the department. Dr. M K Nanjappa and Dr. N Sathyananda served as Principals of the college. Dr. N Sathyananda also served as the Coordinator for the first NAAC accreditation process during 2004.

The faculty participate in designing curriculum, as resource persons for student and teacher workshops at High School, PU and degree level. A green house with several collections of plants belonging to different species is developed in the college campus.

Presently, Prof. Zaiba Nishath Bano is heading the department.
