Vijaya College has been fostering the cause of teaching and learning Kannada literature right from the inception of the college. Members of the faculty, past and present, have made significant contributions to Kannada Literature. Few distinguished faculty of the college who have nurtured the department are
Prof G Venkatasubbiah who served between 1943 and 1972 has worked extensively,

  • in the preparation of Kannada Dictionary,

  • as the Secretary of Kannada Sahitya Parishat,

  • as Chief Editor of Kannada Dictionary Committee.

A well-known name in Karnataka, Prof G Venkatasubbiah is also the recipient of Karnataka Rajyotsava award in 1991 and Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award in 1997 and Pampa Award.His work Igo Kannada is a socio-linguistic dictionary which encompasses an eclectic mix of Kannada phrases, usages, idioms, and phrases.

  • Dr. P V Narayana, who served the institution between 1968 and 2000, was – and still is - actively involved in literary research and various Kannada movements. A writer of fiction, his creative and critical writings are well received by the people of Karnataka. He has produced six Ph.D students. He has translated nine books from English to Kannada.

  • Dr. K V Srinivasa Murthy and Prof A Sripada were well-known singers, apart from being very popular teachers.

  • Dr. B S Ramaprasad has published a mega volume work in Kannada titled Karnataka Parampare.

  • Dr. N H Nagaraj served as the Editor of Newspaper Kavalu published by the Kannadigas of Washington and Baltimore, USA.Dr .D Gurumurthy served the department for a brief period.

Presently Dr .K.C Shivaramaiah is heading the department at present.
