DEPARTMENT  OF GENETICS REPORT ON INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME – BIOBOOTCAMP 2022

Genetics department conducted an internship program for a period of one month (3 batches) in association with Azooka life sciences Bio boot camp.  Program was inaugurated on 22nd march 2022 in the presence of college Principle Professor Shylaja K.S, vice principle Dr.Radhakrishna ,Dean of Vijaya college Dr.Samira simha, managing committee member Dr T.A Balakrishna,  faculties of Genetics department , Prof. Dr. Priyadarshini PA (HOD), Prof. Dr. Jalajakshi S and students of BcGMb.

28 students were registered for the programme. The organizers were, Harshini Nadig – Instructor, CNS IISC also a former student and alumni of Vijaya College, helped the college collaborate with Azooka Life Science Company. Dr. Fathima Benazir CSO Azooka labs, Alex D Paul CEO Azooka labs. Three different cycles.

Azooka Life Science is a start-up led by an Indian woman. The lab  is a fluorescent dye firm specialising in the development of safe fluorescent stains for use in biological sciences and genomics. Society for Innovation and Development, Indian Institute of Science, is seed funding and incubating Azooka Life Sciences.

.BIOINFORMATICS

bioinformatics, not only providing an overview of various databases but also demonstrating how they work. We also learned how to use tools like Swiss-model, MUSCLE, Pymol, and Chimera to process the data obtained from these databases. On the last day of the internship, we had the opportunity to try out all of these software along with her and gain hands-on experience with them. The following is an image from Pymol, when we compared healthy and mutant form of  Haemoglobin (HBB) protein.

 WET-LAB

The wet lab experiments were the second phase of the internship, and we did the following experiments.

  • RNA, genomic DNA and Plasmid DNA isolation
  • Protein extraction
  • AGE, Native PAGE, and SDS-PAGE
  • Restriction Digestion
  • PCR and RT-PCR
  • LAMP-LOOP Mediated Isothermal Amplification

An interesting point was, when we did LAMP technique we used the dye manufactured by Azooka Labs called Tincto Rang. It is the only organic, food-grade dye manufactured in India Anand Sir and Shikha mam taught us these techniques. At Azooka labs, we conducted all of these experiments under their supervision. The photographs below are some of the outcomes we obtained.

The internship came to an end with a lecture by Alex sir, in which he taught us about marketing. He used numerous metaphors, such as the Temple and the Bazaar! He gave us advice on how we could improve. He charted a path for us to follow, encouraging us to read more, stay current on advancements in our fields of interest, and most importantly, to dream GREAT!

This was an incredible and unique opportunity. We had the chance to learn these skills and perform them ourselves. Even if we didn’t obtain the best outcomes right away, we were never let down. Because of the supportive environment created by Anand sir and Shikha ma’am at Azooka, we never felt like quitting.  They were all extremely knowledgeable and supportive throughout the 10-day period. We were trusted with and given permission to operate high-precision machinery such as the PCR and RT-PCR machines. We had a great time studying and only wished we could have gone on the eleventh day! Further, we got a chance to visit IISc during one of the days of our internship, where we visited the Azooka lab at Society for Innovation and Development at IISc Campus We performed RT-PCR with Positive Covid samples.

Distribution of certificates

The students who completed the internship, certificate distribution was held on 13, June between 2pm to 4pm. The azzoka members were invited as chief guest, ithe programe was organized under the guidance of principal and Dr. T.A.Balakrishna. Professor Dr. A.S. Govind from physics department also co-ordinator of placement cell participated in the function.

Azooka members were glad to express their willingness to conduct workshop, organizing a field visit to IISC, to organise a orientation programme, carrer guidelines to the life science and physical students
